Tip of the Month

Before you bring home your holiday tree, keep composting in mind! Natural, undecorated trees can be turned into mulch and compost after the holidays — helping reduce waste and nourish our local soil.

If you’re buying a natural tree, choose one that’s unflocked and free of fake snow or glitter, as these materials can’t be composted. Be sure to remove all decorations, tinsel, and stands before setting your tree on the curb for collection, or bring larger trees to the Yolo County Central Landfill for composting.

Fall Back and Save Water: Adjust Your Irrigation for the Season

As the seasons change, shorter days and cooler temperatures mean your landscape requires less water, even if rainfall is still limited. When you turn your clocks back for Daylight Saving Time on November 2, it is also a good time to adjust your irrigation system. Reducing running times during the fall helps conserve water and keeps your plants healthy.

To help avoid overwatering, consider installing a Weather-Based Irrigation Controller (WBIC). These smart devices use local weather data to automatically adjust watering schedules, ensuring your landscape receives the right amount of water throughout the year.

The City of Woodland offers rebates to help residents upgrade to these water-efficient systems. Learn more and apply by Clicking Here.

Thanksgiving Holiday Tips

This season, let’s show gratitude by caring for what we already have and reducing our environmental footprint. Try reusing plates and cutlery you already own, borrowing festive ware from friends or family, or finding secondhand treasures to make your table shine sustainably. If your carving knives are getting dull, sharpen them at home or at Ace Hardware instead of buying new ones.

To help avoid food waste, use a meal-planning website such as lovefoodhatewaste.com to prepare just the right amount for your gatherings — and when the meal is done, remember to scrape any food scraps (including turkey bones!) into your organics cart for composting.

It's Leaf Drop Season!

From November 1 to January 31, green waste street piles are picked up weekly. Please fill your organics cart first, but if you need to create street piles, ensure they’re no larger than 4' wide, 5 ' long, and 4' high, and keep them clear of gutters to prevent flooding. For more information, visit our site.

Don't let FOG Dampen Your Holiday!

The holidays are a busy time in the kitchen, but remember: fats, oils, and grease (FOG) don’t go down the drain! When poured into sinks, FOG can harden and build up in pipes, leading to costly clogs and sewer backups.

Instead, let fats cool, scrape them into a container, and dispose of them in your organics cart. If you have larger amounts, such as from a deep fat fryer, cooking oil can be recycled at the Yolo County Landfill during HHW hours.
