Tip of the Month

This holiday season, embrace sustainable gift-giving by choosing experiences over things, reusable wrapping like fabric or scarves, and homemade treats instead of store-bought items. Decorate with natural elements such as pinecones and greenery, and remember to compost any food scraps from your festive meals.

And one more eco-friendly tip: consider skipping the flocked Christmas tree this year. While they may look pretty, flocked trees are not accepted in street-pile collections. The material sprayed on them makes the trees non-compostable, so they must be disposed of as trash.

It's the most wonderful time of the year... to conserve water

Make Every Drop Count This Winter

Even in the cooler months, you can make a meaningful difference in conserving water. Here are three simple ways to save water during the winter:

1. Update Your Irrigation Schedule

Shorter days and cooler temperatures mean your landscape needs less water—even if rainfall is limited. Reduce your irrigation run times and/or the number of watering days to match the season’s needs.

2. Switch to a Weather-Based Irrigation Controller (WBIC)

A WBIC adjusts watering automatically based on local weather conditions and skips watering when it rains. Woodland water users may be eligible for a $150 rebate for WBICs! Learn more at Envirowoodland.gov/Rebates.

3. Monitor Your Water Use

Review your water bill to make sure your household’s water use looks accurate. If you notice sudden increases—especially when irrigation is off or reduced—log into AquaHawk at Envirowoodland.gov/MyWaterUse to check for possible leaks.

Paper Cups are Now Recyclable in Woodland!

Paper Cups are Now Recyclable in Woodland!

Single-use paper cups, like the ones from coffee shops or to-go restaurants, are now accepted in your blue-lidded recycling cart!

Before recycling:

  • Dump out all liquid.
  • Wipe out the cup with a napkin to remove any excess liquid or residue.

Remember, the best choice is always to bring your own reusable cup, but recycling unavoidable single-use cups helps keep valuable materials out of the landfill.
