CPR Saves Lives
When a cardiac emergency strikes, every second counts. At the Woodland Fire Department, we are committed to providing the highest level of emergency care, and our efforts are making a real difference. Our CPR success rate is 44%—significantly higher than the national average of just 10% for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival (American Heart Association).
What Makes the Difference?
Our success in saving lives comes from a combination of rapid response, high-quality CPR, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
Why Learn CPR?
Cardiac arrests are more common than you might think and they can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. The American Heart Association estimates that immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival after cardiac arrest. Learning CPR empowers you to act swiftly and effectively, giving someone a fighting chance until professional help arrives.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): Be Ready to Save a Life
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a powerful, life-saving device that can restore a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). AEDs are easy to use, providing step-by-step voice instructions to guide even untrained bystanders through the process. When used alongside high-quality CPR, AEDs significantly improve survival rates.
Why AEDs Matter
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chance of survival drops by 7-10%. Early use of an AED—especially before emergency responders arrive—can mean the difference between life and death.
How Woodland Fire Department Supports AED Use
At the Woodland Fire Department, we are committed to increasing early defibrillation efforts by:
✔️ Equipping all emergency vehicles with AEDs.
✔️ Training our first responders in high-quality CPR and AED use.
✔️ Encouraging businesses and community members to make AEDs accessible and easy to locate.
