Sort It Out: K-12 Lessons on Rethinking Waste in Yolo County is a free, locally tailored curriculum designed to teach students how to properly sort waste, understand California’s recycling laws, and explore the science and systems behind waste reduction in Yolo County. The guide supports classroom, homeschool, and informal educators with hands-on, grade-specific lessons that align with state NGSS and environmental literacy goals.

How to Use Sort It Out!
The guide is organized into four grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12), each with units containing lessons that follow the 5E instructional model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Expand, and Evaluate. Activities include teacher notes, supply lists, student handouts, and extension ideas and are adaptable for a range of learning settings.
