Join the City of Woodland in January to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration will be comprised of three separate self-directed connections for public reflection to honor Dr. King including a Youth Poetry Contest, a Chalk Mural Contest, and a Peace Run. 

Youth Poetry Contest: Students in grades 7-12 are invited to write a poem about a vision of peace within the community. First prize will be awarded in the two age categories of middle school students and high school students. Poems entries must be submitted by January 13. Selected winners will be asked to submit a video of the winning poems to be read for the January 19 City Council meeting. To submit enter the Youth Poetry Contest, visit www.cityofwoodland.org/MLK.

Sidewalk Chalk Peace Mural Contest: Community members are encouraged to create a sidewalk mural at home. Anyone can participate! Murals can be any size just as long as it reflects a general theme of a vision of peace. Murals must be in locations where permission has been given by property owners. Prizes will be awarded for first place in the following categories K-3rd grades, 4th-6th grades, middle school students, high school students, and 18 & over. Mural entries must be submitted by January 13. Selected artwork will be shown during the January 19 City Council meeting.  Participants are encouraged to share their artwork on social media using the hash-tag #MLKVisionsofPeace. To submit enter the Sidewalk Chalk Peace Mural Contest, visit www.cityofwoodland.org/MLK.

Virtual Fun Run & Walk: The Run for Peace Virtual Fun Run & Walk encourages community members to run or walk 5 kilometers for the vision of peace. The 5K (or 3.1 miles) can be completed between January 1-15.  Participants register for free to win local prizes. All ages are welcome to participate in the Run for Peace Virtual Fun Run & Walk, participant categories are as follows: Kindergarten-6th grades, 7th-12th grades, 18 and over, and 55 and over. Upon completion of the 5K, participants submit proof by submitting a photo or link to a distance tracker by visiting www.cityofwoodland.org/MLK. All submissions must be received by January 15, 4 pm. Connect with other runners using #MLKVisionsofPeace.
