A Request for Alternate Materials, Design, and Methods of Construction—commonly referred to as an "alternate means and methods request"—is a formal request submitted to a building or fire code official when a proposed construction method, material, or design doesn’t follow the strict prescriptive requirements of the adopted codes, but meets or exceeds the intent of those codes in terms of safety, functionality, and performance.

Approval will be based on whether the proposed alternative meets or exceeds the intent of the applicable codes in terms of safety, performance, and compliance.
