Specimen Trees

A specimen tree is defined in the City of Woodland's Tree Ordinance as "any tree of interest because of its size or unusual species, other than a heritage tree, which is of good quality in terms of health, vigor or growth, and conformity to generally accepted horticulture standards of shape for its species, as designated by the City Council upon the recommendation of both the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Urban Forestry Group." 

The Woodland City Council has approved the nomination of the following specimen trees.

Grove of Italian Stone Pinesstone pine grove at Campbell

A grove of thirteen Italian stone pines, Pinus pinea, is located along Thomas Street at Campbell Park. This species is native to the Mediterranean region but has been planted worldwide in abundance in similar climates. Additionally, the species is known for the edible pine nuts it produces.




Grove of Bald Cypresscypress grove at Campbell

Four bald cypress, Taxodium distichum, form a small grove on the south side of Campbell Park. These trees are sometimes referred to as "swamp cypress" because they are typically associated with the swamp lands of Louisiana, where it is the official state tree.

This tree was planted in 1979 as part of the original design and creation of the Ferns Park Nature Area. It is a collection of native Californian plants representing various parts of California's unique and diverse plant communities.

Foothill Pine at Ferns Park

Gray Pine

This Gray pine, also known as the Foothill pine, was planted in the Ferns Park Nature Area in 1979. Initially just two feet tall, it has grown into a large, beautiful specimen.

English WalnutEnglish Walnut at Ferns Park

John Ferns Park was a walnut orchard before becoming a park in the City of Woodland. The beautiful specimen tree and a few other remaining walnut trees scattered throughout the park remind visitors of Woodland's rich agricultural past, present, and future.

Canary Island PineCanary Island Pine at Freeman Park

This large and graceful pine tree adorns the western side of Freeman Park, providing much-needed shade for park users on hot summer afternoons. The Canary Island Pine here is one of the largest of its species in Woodland and is well deserving of its Specimen Tree status.

Atlas Cedar at Freeman ParkBlue Atlas Cedar

This striking tree, with its blue-green leaves, is native to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It is well adapted to Woodland's climate and soil and can grow to a height of 70 feet. This tree is one of Woodland's finest examples of an Atlas cedar.
