Weed Abatement

Ensuring the safety and well-being of our community and promoting fire safety are the driving forces behind the City of Woodland Weed Abatement Ordinance (Municipal Code 9.44). This ordinance requires the removal of dry vegetation, weeds, rubbish, and other fire hazards, typically in late spring or early summer each calendar year.

The Weed Abatement Date for 2025 is Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

As part of our commitment to fire prevention and community safety, our Fire Chief may declare weeds to be a public nuisance. Upon this declaration, parcel owners of vacant lots identified within the City limits will receive notification via US mail regarding the identified nuisance and will be provided with an abate-by date.

Our dedicated Community Risk Reduction Division conducts thorough Weed Abatement inspections to ensure all identified properties comply with the City's ordinance. For properties not in compliance by the specified abatement date, the City reserves the right to contract abatement services at the property owner's expense. This may include administrative fines, citations, and other costs, which could become a lien or special assessment upon the property.

Rare, Threatened, or Endangered Plants or Wildlife

We understand the importance of environmental conservation, which is why property owners who discover rare, threatened, or endangered plants or wildlife on their property are encouraged to notify the appropriate agencies in advance of undertaking vegetation clearance. This includes notifying the Department of Fish and Wildlife (or appropriate agency) at least ten (10) days prior to abatement if rare species are present.

Additionally, if property owners are aware of any State or Federally-listed species on their property, they should notify the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Department of Fish and Wildlife before proceeding with abatement activities. It's essential to report any incidents involving State or Federal candidate or listed species to the respective agencies promptly.

At the Woodland Fire Department, we adhere to the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship. Unless prohibited by the Endangered Species Act, all parcels shall be abated per the Woodland Standard.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe and environmentally conscious. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our Weed Abatement Program, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
